Furniture Feet – Styles To Add To Your Sofa, Couch Or Cabinets

Elegance of furniture is dependent on the craftsmanship, design, wood material, finish and painting or varnish. Pullers and hinges are also selected to add to the desired look. But it seems that a neglected part – not so much given attention to, is the furniture feet. Unknown to many furniture buyers, the kind of furniture feet can plus or minus the aesthetic value of the furniture.

Furniture feet have been designed in many different shapes – so creative that what you did not notice before might become the focal point of attention. Some of the creations are the bun feet which can be round or square, ogee feet or dovetail feet. These parts are also called furniture legs and they are made of wood.

The main use of these feet was on chairs, sofa and couch. But today, we find these as accent to trunks, cabinets, chest of drawers and armories. The furniture feet even found its way to kitchen cabinets and when crafted meticulously can add to the elegance and value of the furniture.

So – let us take a look at a few types of furniture feet.

Bun Furniture Feet

From the name, these furniture feet are in the shape of a bun, rounded. There are many designs of bun feet. They can be larger on top tapering into a smaller rounded base. Or you can have it the other way – the base has bigger diameter than the part attached to the main furniture. Each design has its own uniqueness though there could be similarity in pattern. What is intriguing is the square bun feet.  Years ago, this type of furniture feet was limited to what is known as square taper furniture feet.  But today, with modern equipment such as the rotary knife lathe, the square can be incorporated in the round or vice. This will create a further different style.

Ogee Furniture Feet

The Ogee feet are curved from a moulding. They are 4 ½ inches high. If you are to use this style, you have to order two front feet, two rear feet which are left rear foot and right rear foot. You have to be specific in your needs. The front foot can be useful as either front left or front right. All you have to do is turn it 90 degrees to take its proper position in a cabinet base.  It would require some trim mouldings to be attached to the front and sides of the case.

Dovetail Furniture Feet

The dovetail feet are considered the most outstanding joinery – most beautiful wood work joins. In buying this type, you must be very specific as to the right and left and you have to be aware on how you are oriented. The key in buying lies in the interlocking tenons. These form the dovetails and there are two types of tails – the slender projections called pins and the chunkier tails. The former are place in front of the cabinets to demonstrate their absolute delicacy. The other tail type is located in the subordinate faces.

There are still so many designs and types of furniture feet such as the Queen Anne and the antiques. With today’s advent of “green furniture” you can choose the eco-friendly kinds of wood. Make a retouch in your cabinets, chairs or sofa, browse a catalogue of furniture feet.
